Written for young adult librarians, this guide suggests a monthly schedule of events, featuring one, two, or three programs for teenage library users. Instructions for each are provided, along with sample flyers, letters, and checklists. Some of the events listed can tie into school activities or national events; other stand on their own. Edwards is a young adult librarian for the King County Library in Duvall, Washington. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Written with a focus on public library programs, these ideas can easily be adapted for junior and senior high schools. The month-by-month descriptions offer activities that can be done by only one librarian. The suggestions have been "teen tested" in the small northwestern community library where the author works, and she indicates how these programs meet the developmental needs or desires common to this age group. The three essential parts to any program are cited: advertising, preparation, and presentation. Step-by-step directions for creating displays, question boards, and sources for expanding the theme or idea are also given. The detailed description on how to make a book should be a welcome addition for both librarians and teachers. Information and topics include tips on community involvement, summer-job programs, skits, homeschooling, games, surveys, pen-pal spreadsheets, Teen Read Week, mystery night, and publicity. The evaluation process is highlighted as well as possibilities of working with other types of libraries. This is an excellent, no-nonsense guide that describes programs that can be executed with a minimum amount of effort. Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
